Our Poetry Collection

Over the last few weeks we have been studying and learning how to write poetry in many different forms. The best of these are being published by each student in their own Poetry Collection which will then be in the book corner for others to read and also be shared with our buddy class.

Here is a sample of some our best work.

Mood Poems

Happiness by Emily

Happiness is yellow
It tastes like a mango smoothie
It smells like freshly made bread
Happiness looks like the glistening water of the sea
The sound of fresh water trickling from a waterfall
Happiness is delightful

Confusion by Connor N

Confusion is all the colours racing towards you
It tastes like broccoli and tomato sauce
Confusion smells like petrol running up your nose
It looks like an illusion
The sounds of a menacing scream pulsing in your ear
Confusion worries me

Energetic by Connor D

Energy is green
It tastes like lime Powerade
And smells like cold air as it chills your throat
Energy looks like a glass of fizzy as it buzzes
Energy sounds like people puffing as they run
Energy is chasing the ball to the other end of the pitch to score a goal
Energy excites me

Happiness by Corben

Happiness is red
It tastes like steamy popcorn
and smells like fresh spring air
Happiness looks like smiling faces
The sound of laughing kids
Happiness makes me smile

Anger by Tom

Anger is a deep blood red
It tastes just like hot chilli sauce
And smells like burning rubber
It looks like rippling fire
It sounds like a wolf howling at the moon
Anger annoys me

Sadness by Dominic

Sadness is blue
It tastes like cold ice blocks
And tastes like frozen chips
Sadness looks like an empty house
And the sound of distant crying
Sadness makes me wrectched

Comparison Poetry

Waterfall by Renee

A waterfall is a cheetah
chasing its prey
It rushes down and down, hitting everything in it's way
It slams to the bottom, pouncing on it's dinner
Breath taking and perfect
through every hour of the day
It beats all with it's beauty and power
It goes so fast it's almost like it's flying
Never lying down or being lazy
It's always active as it zooms past,
So fast.

Earthquake by Harlen

The earthquake is a saber tooth tiger
The two pointy teeth and the muscular body
is enough to make the tectonic plates shiver.

Jumping sky high, running on the richter scale
shaking the ground with every stomp
Bang! Bam! Kablamo!

Cracking the ground
roaring loudly, making people wonder -
'Will I live or will I die?'

Gnawing and roaring
This is the power of the Saber Tooth Tiger

The Volcano by Connor N

The volcano is a dragon
Slowly waking
Flying around
Bursting out fire
with lava roars and tonnes of smoke
into the village below
The roar is menacing
As loud as thunder

The dragon is exhausted,
has used up all it's power
The dragon sleeps
Never to be heard of again.

Haiku

Winter by Olivia

Cold lonely season
Snow slowly falling to ground
Rain frozen to ice

Deep Sea by Alex

Dark and intriguing
Mystical,lively creatures
Dangerous waters

Sound Poetry

Nature by Bridget

The native birds are singing their haunting songs
Above the noise of my approaching companions I can hear the wind rustling
The canopy above making the tress creak and groan as if whispering to me, trying to tell me something
There is a creek that turns into a gushing waterfall
The noise is deafening but beautiful.

The Beach by Jackson

Waves crashing on the sand
Seagulls screeching at the food
People chatting as they swim
Motor boats zooming by
Echoes bouncing off the cave walls
Fish jumping in the water
and divers splashing in the sea

Cayden's Art for Mr McKenzie

Cayden has spent hours completing another door sign, this time for Deputy Principal, Mr McKenzie. Cayden is proud of his finished work and especially liked his idea of placing different sports balls all over the background as he knows Mr McKenzie loves his sport!

Team 24 do Jump Jam!

These cold rainy winter days can make it difficult to get out for fitness so Team 24 like to take a 'brain break' with a few jump jam tracks. It doesn't take long to quickly rearrange the furniture and we are set to get the heart rates pumping and have a few laughs at our amazing coordination and singing skills (or lack of!) ....... check it out....

Poetry Contest

Last week the class recited their chosen poems to the class. There was a real mixture of poems chosen and it made for great show. Mr McKenzie was our judge.
Congratulations to Connor N, Bridget, Emily, Harlen and Nadun who have made it though to the finals for the Year 5 and 6 Poetry Competition. We look forward to watching you over at English Park on Thursday.
I aim to get video clips of the students doing their poems up here on the blog asap. Just a few technical hiccups at the moment!

Heart Jam

Finally the weather improved and we got to participate in the National Heart Jam day raising money for children through out NZ who suffer heart problems. We decked ourselves from head to toe in RED and enjoyed some great Jump jam tracks with the whole school. We also enjoyed seeing Connor N and Satori perform their Jump Jam A team routine 'Camp Rock'
